Selection & Set up

Datadog has a range of tools with many different configuration options, all of which have a licence & cost implication. Helping you navigate this is one area that continues to come up, either for a new install or for a change to add more functionality. 

Once you have chosen the tool set you want to set up the process for log ingestion and retention configuration is complex. If this is done incorrectly it can lead to problems with getting the real value from Datadog when you use the data for troubleshooting or analysis.

Cost of log analytics for processing and retention

For troubleshooting and analysis, you need a set of historical metrics to refer to. However, businesses can often get caught out by the sharp rise in cost as logs are retained for longer. 

The cost of processing logs is low, and storage is quite low as well. But over your entire cloud estate if you want to retain everything for more than 30 days then you will need to agree on this with Datadog directly.
