Microsoft has announced the appointment of Satya Nadella as its new CEO. Nadella has been with Microsoft for 22 years, rising through the ranks to eventually become its head of Cloud and Enterprise – a divisions that has flourished under his stewardship. He is a seen as a likable, calm and collaborative individual who is, in many ways, quite different to his predecessor, the exuberant Steve Ballmer.
Nadella’s experience and personality seem to make him an ideal choice for Microsoft at the current time. The company’s focus on device unification and its underlying foundation of cloud technologies are areas in which Nadella will presumably not only be keen to continue pushing, but in which he will have a deep understanding. Likewise, Nadella’s naturally calming and thoughtful persona may be just what Microsoft needs at a time of strategic realignment, something not lost on company founder and board member Bill Gates.
“During this time of transformation, there is no better person to lead Microsoft than Satya Nadella,” said Gates. “Satya is a proven leader with hard-core engineering skills, business vision and the ability to bring people together. His vision for how technology will be used and experienced around the world is exactly what Microsoft needs as the company enters its next chapter of expanded product innovation and growth.”
In an email to employees, Nadella outlined his vision for the future. “I believe over the next decade computing will become even more ubiquitous and intelligence will become ambient,” he said. “The coevolution of software and new hardware form factors will intermediate and digitize — many of the things we do and experience in business, life and our world. This will be made possible by an ever-growing network of connected devices, incredible computing capacity from the cloud, insights from big data, and intelligence from machine learning.”
Nadella’s appointment is likely to firm up Microsoft’s strategy and perhaps refine its delivery. He is a good fit for the company at a time when stability is required. His background will drive a greater emphasis from Microsoft on the cloud, delivering its products via the Web in particular, and on mobile. Anyone in doubt should consider Nadella’s oft repeated mantra since his appointment, “cloud-first, mobile-first”.
