SharePoint Hosting Requirements

igroup consider multiple factors when planning how SharePoint will be deployed,

SharePoint is a complex application which can be at the heart of multiple business operations and accessed by large numbers of staff.  The specific hosting requirements of the software are dependent on individual business needs and when planning a solution that meets your specific usage levels, igroup will consider both the hardware and any additional software required to properly host SharePoint for your needs.

Key elements of SharePoint Hosting

A SharePoint farm, whether using physical or virtual infrastructure is normally made up of multiple machines that handle different functions:

    • Application Server
    • Database Server
    • Front End Server

Alongside these, your farm will also include machines to handle Active Directory for identity and user management; as well as providing resource to handle the diagnostics software that ensures SharePoint functions correctly.

SharePoint Hosting Software Requirements

The minimum Software Requirements for hosting SharePoint are as follows:

Database Server

    • Either the 64-Bit Edition of Microsoft SQL Server 2012
    • Or
    • The 64-Bit Edition of Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1
    • Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5

Front End Web Server

    • Either the 64-Bit Edition of Microsoft SQL Server 2012
    • Or
    • The 64-Bit Edition of Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1
    • Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows Server 2012
    • IIS 7.5

As well as the software above, SharePoint’s Product Preparation Tool will also install additional software including Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5, Microsoft Sync Runtime; PowerShell; and Windows Identity Framework (WIF).

Hardware Requirements

SharePoint requires solid compute resource to run effectively.

Your actual environment structure will always be dependent on the level of usage that is required including:

  • Number of users (processor and memory to handle demand)
  • Amount of data stored (overall disk size)

SharePoint’s minimum hardware requirements are as follows:

Database Servers

    • Up to 1000 users: 64-Bit Processor, 4 Cores, 8GB RAM
    • Over 1000 users: 64-Bit Processor, 8 Cores, 64GB RAM
    • 80GB Hard Disk (This will need to scale based on demand)

Web / Application Server

    • 64-Bit Processor, 8 Cores, 12GB RAM
    • 80GB Hard Disk (This will need to scale based on demand)

Physical or Cloud Infrastructure for SharePoint Hosting

Traditionally, most businesses would use physical servers to host SharePoint, however with the need to access data remotely and the opportunities for cost saving compared to legacy hardware, many businesses are choosing to migrate to the public cloud.  Azure offers the ability to use flexible resource to handle peaks and troughs in demand as well as providing greater reliability and a more straightforward system of managing back-ups and archiving.

SharePoint can be hosted in Microsoft Azure data centres using a specification of virtual machines to match any configuration.

The primary advantage of cloud hosting in Azure is the flexibility to change the structure of the farm as your organisation’s needs change.

In certain industries there are compliance requirements for data governance that may require hosting some data under certain conditions (e.g. in a particular location) although there can be greater freedom about where the application itself is hosted.
