System software manages the computer’s hardware, or the actual physical electronic components, including the CPU, keyboard, monitor, and mouse. Common system software is Microsoft Windows, Mac OX, Linux, and Unix. Most people don’t think about what their system software is doing. The common computer user works with the application software like their word processor or web browser and gives little thought to the system software which performs such tasks as transferring data between memory and a disk, launching and running the drivers for various devices, running and performing utilities, and performing security functions. Many users have strong preferences for the operating system that they have grown accustomed to. Still others have made a hobby of designing new system software, some of which has actually gained a following. Most computers come with system software installed and ready to use. It is important, even if you’re just a casual computer user, to make sure that your system software remains updated with the most current version available.
