Tablet personal computers have been around for the last few years, but without the operating system to run a tablet personal computer, the device itself is worthless. Linux and UNIX variants are availabe, and Sun makes versions of its operating system, Solaris available on the mobile devices it offers. Most users will end up using a version of Windows specifically designed for their system. XP offers a tablet version that is not scaled down, but has added features to deal with the needs of table pc users specifically, and will run many of the same software applications that run on the desktop with little or no modification. The stylus is treated as a mouse by the Windows XP and Vista Tablet edition programmers. Still, the Solaris systems offer slightly more stability and power and the programmers have considered how to integrate them with tablet personal computers running other operating systems.
