Mobile database software should be thought of at the start of a mobile solutions project. There are a number of databases that can be used, these include SQL CE 2.0, Windows Mobile and third party ones such as Ultralite from iAnywhere.
The power of a mobile application is gained from the amount of functionality that the user is able to use. Having a mobile database embedded within the software gives an application huge potential. For instance, a list of customer details can be stored in the database for a sales exec to phone whilst they are on the move. A companies entire stock catalogue could also be kept on the database. By using SQL queries to perform queries the application can run much faster than if a flat file or XML file was used.
The greatest strength of having a mobile database is that data can be stored for future synchronisation. Mobile solutions are often deployed in disconnected environments, they need to be able to work when there is no connection but also send or receive any changed data once a connection becomes active.
We have used and recommend iAnywheres Mobilink platform with an Ultralite database. This ensures that we have the power of an onboard SQL relational database but can also get this data back to the database by using Mobilink to synchronise the data.
If this sounds familiar for you in a mobile project and you not sure how to go about it then get in touch and we will be able to help.
